SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 - TRAPPING & FUNDING REPORT

BACK IN ACTION

Now that the tourists have gone, our team trappers and good neighbours have been able to deal with our CumbreCats and give them the extra care that they need.

WOUND GETS ATTENTION

On Wednesday, August 31, 2022 one of our caregivers in the Monte Cala zone contacted our head trapper about an injured CumbreCat.

Trapper Report:

"Thanks to the keen eye of one of our carers, she was able to spot one of the CumbreCats with a very bad looking wound on its tail.

The carer informed me and I immediately grabbed my trap and made my way to the carer where the injured cat was coming for breakfast. She prepared the trap with a tasty little breakfast to attract him, but first he watched and checked the trap from all sides. Then he danced around the trap a little, but as the only food was in it, he finally went into the trap, touched the trigger and was caught.

Quickly the carer covered the trap and took the CumbreCat to our wonderful village vet Veronica. She cleaned the wound and gave him a shot of long-lasting antibiotics and for the pain.

The carer picked him up in the early afternoon and let him sleep a little until he was fully awake again. Happily, he ran away as soon as he was freed. But soon after, he came back to eat.

The carer reports that CumbreCats' wound is gradually healing. He will not have any more problems."

DANCING AROUND

On Thursday, September 1, 2022, our head trapper was together with one of the caregivers to see about some adult sized kittens.

Trapper Report

"I discovered four kittens, about six months old, wanting to be fed in the garden of one of our carers. I was glad of this place, because it is always easier to catch them when they are hungry CumbreCats.

I went with one of our other carers to the home in Girasoles. When we got there, the gate was open and a hungry black kitten was waiting for us, so I hurried to prepare the trap.

The first piece she grabbed was outside the trap, while her sibling wanted to get into the trap. Then the black youth decided to go in to eat, but the other one was too close to the door. Slowly I moved a little to chase away the cat that was outside. It ran away, and luckily the eating kitten did not mind, and I was able to close the automatic trap.

Very quickly we got her into the carrier to release the trap. Three more CumbreCats felt a little confused but hungry and danced around the trap. We prepared three traps with tuna and fish wet food and distributed them in the garden.

We hid a bit away and waited very quietly for the sound of the trap trigger. They did not go for the remote trap, but the regular trap was interesting. It was not long before the second female kitten was in the trap. We covered the trap as usual, of course, and moved it to another transport box.

But now the other two CumbreCats were alarmed and scared. The black one disappeared - the other grey tabby danced around, stared at us very warily and did not seem to know what to do with her hungry belly.

The salmon was my last weapon and that taste drove her absolutely wild, so she went into the regular trap and was caught too. What luck. We waited another half hour for the fourth black, but no luck.

Two cars were full of traps and transport boxes when we took the cats to Veronica.

Around 2pm we picked them up, and they recovered in a quiet room. Late in the evening I brought them back to the garden. Two disappeared very quickly and the third young girl decided to wait for food.

These three CumbreCats are doing well and the other will have wait until another day!"

MINI PANTHER NOT ON PROWL NOW

On Friday, September 2, 2022, one of the team trappers had good luck with trapping a CumbreCat in Camelias.

Trapper Report

"Today I wanted to trap the sister's six-month-old brother from last week. When I showed up at Camelias with the trap, the mini-panther was nowhere to be found. Instead, his mother and two of his aunts showed up, along with a tiny tabby kitten.

The tiny tabby ran in and out of the trap to feast on the delicious food, but the little one would have to wait another month or so before he could go to the vet.

We all waited for almost an hour and finally the little panther emerged. He was interested in the food in the trap and carefully went in with the kitten. I wanted him to be alone in the trap, so I needed more patience. And when I turned my back to the trap for a short second, he finally went in, hurray!

We arrived at the vet's office around 11:30. The surgery went quickly, and he could be picked up in the early afternoon. He then stayed in a dark and cool recovery room and slept off the anaesthetic. He was discharged in the evening to have dinner with his family.

This CumbreCat can now enjoy a quieter life with less roaming and less fighting."

FUNDING REPORT

Big Thank you to Frank from Cafe Wagner on the Benitachell to Moraira road, next to Mas y Mas, for a kind donation of 30 euros. He also now has one of our unique collection cans. These cans not only help with collections but with promotion of our campaign.

Speaking of the donation cans, this summer, with all the tourists, our cans didn't do very well.  We did much better with local donation from the community and a really bid donation from a lady from Switzerland. GREAT!!

FUNDRAISER

Good thing we have a Fundraiser on October 9th, 2022.
It's a traditional Arts & Crafts morning with Tombola but this time we have some Live Entertainment!!
