AUGUST 29, 2022 - TRAPPING REPORT
We begin our report with a heart-warming story that shows that there are animal lovers of all ages.
Head Trapper Report:
"On Tuesday 23 August 2022, I received a report that one of our spayed black CumbreCats was injured in the begonia area. A German family who were on holiday contacted various people until they found me. They were good and sent me a video and photos of the cat.
Our regular cat feeder had already informed me about the sighting of the injured cat three weeks ago, but of course the cat disappeared. This usually happens when holidaymakers are here and feed the cats as part of their holiday adventure.
In this case, it was a good thing because the family's children gained the cat's trust. Two little boys who regularly fed her noticed that the cat was limping and informed their parents because they were so worried.
I had a conversation with the family that the best thing to do was to trap the cat. The father picked up the trap, and they started feeding in the trap. It took a few days, but eventually the cat went into the trap.
The next morning they took the cat to Veronica to have it examined. She reported that the CumbreCat had quite a large tumour, but she was able to remove it. The family picked up the cat after the operation and let her sleep in a quiet room until evening.
The boys opened the transport box and released the cat. She was happy and went to the food bowl and ate plenty.
The children were so happy that the CumbreCat was well and going to recover.. The family paid for the surgery and donated another amount to our campaign. Even the children spent €30 of their own pocket money.
This is the kind of happy story we like. It's good to know that there are such lovely people who care!"
A FAMILY AFFAIR
On Thursday, August 23, 2022, the beautiful CumbreCats caregiver pulled out a top-notch effort in the Magnolia Zone.
Head Trapper Report:
"A resident and carer of many cats started her own campaign to trap a whole family. As a carer and feeder, this wonderful woman was able to gain the trust of the CumbreCats in her area, which facilitated her efforts.
She placed some biscuits in a transport box. The hungry mother started sniffing at the entrance. The keeper managed to gently push her into the box and close the door. When she turned around, she discovered her five older kittens in the garden.
The next day, the carer was able to repeat the procedure and capture the father of the family.
On Monday, the caregiver continued her trapping method and caught one of the older kittens, a male.
On Tuesday, the keeper discovered another mother that had given birth in her garden in the spring. She managed to catch this mother and put her in a transport box as well.
Believe it or not, but on Wednesday a third mother cat came into her garden and again the caretaker was able to lure her into a transport box with a few biscuits.
This caretaker brought Veronica all the deliveries and also did the pick-ups and releases.
We can not thank this caretaker enough for her fantastic work and support for our group.
The caretaker will keep an eye on the younger kittens because when they are old enough they will need to be neutered.
Luckily we have enough money in donations to cover this incredible expense."
HIT & MISS... UNTIL NEXT TIME
On Tuesday 23 August 2022, our Head Trapper was contacted by the carer in Lirios that there are some older kittens that need to be neutered.
Head Trapper Report:
"Thanks to the good cooperation with the team's carers, I was able to tell the carer not to feed the cats until I had set the traps.
I went and prepared two traps with the delicious biscuits that we know the CumbreCats just love. I hid and was surprised that it only took five minutes for two females, probably sisters, to enter the trap together and for me to press the close button of the automatic trap.
Unfortunately, the third cat disappeared and did not come back... until I left!
The carer contacted me and I immediately rushed back and set another trap, but she was not interested, so no worries. I'll catch her next time.
I took the other two cats to Veronica's and picked them up later. After they recovered, I released them back in the same spot."
THE TIME HAS COME
On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, the CumbreCat carer of MonteCala and our head trapper worked together to bring about two needed solutions.
Head Trapper Report:
"I was visiting with the carer in MonteCala one day, and we noticed a pretty CumbreCat cat named Bella. She was posing for a big CumbreCat male that looked like a panther. We knew this female was already a mother because she had given birth to a beautiful kitten in the spring. We could not let something like that happen again, so the alarm bells went off.
The carer had tried to get the mother cat to eat regularly from a secure trap, but the mother had never trusted the trap and would not go in. I even tried several times, but she never went into the trap.
Now, however, with the black panther on the prowl, other options had to be explored. We decided to trap in the morning and in the evening.
We still had no luck when a very skinny black CumbreCat cat showed up. She was crying and clearly in pain. We could see that she was suffering. We lured her into the trap with a biscuit. She was hungry and went into the trap without hesitation. We put her in a night box and gave her more food and water. She stopped crying and felt safe in the very quiet room.
The next morning, the carer was frustrated, so she decided to pet the mother cat a little while she ate, then just grabbed her and put her in the carrier. We were so happy.
The carer took both cats to Veronica.
Veronica examined the thin black cat and confirmed that she was very sick and that her liver was no longer functioning and that she had to be put down. Veronica put her to sleep to end her suffering. It was good that we could help her and not let her die alone and in pain.
We are so happy that we now have the uncomplicated cooperation of Isolina from Gato Felices for the euthanasia and the crematorium. We are very grateful for this.
Bella was neutered early in the afternoon and the carer picked her to let her sleep in her home. She released the beautiful CumbreCat back to her family in the early evening.
The black panther was there too and gave her kisses. But he is NEXT!!!"
ONE MORE TO GO!
On Friday, August 26, 2022, we had a report come in from the carer/trapper in Camelias.
Camelias Trapper Report:
"A young CumbreCat, born in March, was to be caught at the end of August, as was her sibling. This little kitten is a copy of her mother, white and grey and lives in Camelias. She had been trapped many times before, but as she was too young to be sterilised at the time, she was never actually caught until now.
It did not take long before she was trapped, and we made our way to the vet. Everything went smoothly and after an early morning operation she was ready to move back in with her mother and the rest of the family that evening.
The vet was kind enough to give her a dewormer to aid her recovery.
Next time I hope to catch her sibling, who is unfortunately much more cautious than her sister when it comes to being trapped. To be continued!"
