APRIL 23, 2022 - TRAPPING REPORT & BAD / GOOD NEWS
TRAPPING IS A TEAM EFFORT
On April 19, 2022, our head trapper was out in the Girasoles zone behind Pepe La Sal. In this zone, we have a fantastic gentleman who has been feeding and caring for the CumbreCats for many, many years. He is the salt-of-the-earth kind and will be rewarded a thousand times over for being a spectacular human with a grand heart.
TRAPPER REPORT:
“I made an appointment with our CumbreCat man to co-ordinate a trapping session. We make a good team.
He was instructed not to feed the cats the previous evening so that I could trap in the morning. We started at 8:00. I set up 2 traps for the goal to trap a female that our Feederman has tried to capture for many years.
We filled both traps with regular food and some tasty fish food. Then the trap dance, as we call it, started. The CumbreCat lady danced around the trap, sniffing it, and then she danced over to the other trap and sniffed it. Then she took a break and sat down to survey the situation. Then she was up again, making her rounds.
Sometimes she tried a little piece at the entrance of the trap, but she did not have the courage to go in. I refilled the food and put a trail of snacks up to the trap. I waited. Our Caregiverman crossed his fingers.
He had got to know this lovely lady over the years and watched sadly as she was so often pregnant but continued to give birth to a litter of stillborn kittens.
It took 30 minutes of waiting, but finally she entered the trap. We could happily press the close button.
The other CumbreCats were already neutered, in this zone. We went to another place and set up a new trap.
This was a new trap that was donated by a resident of Cumbre del Sol who wanted to help us. We are always grateful for any help we can get. It's a unique trap with a plexiglass backdoor giving the illusion to be open. The CumbreCats are not so afraid of the trap because they can see through it.
There were many cats in this area. Four CumbreCats and one domestic cat who was very hungry. So the first thing that I had to do was feed the domestic to get him away from the trap. Once he was full, he went home.
Then, I had to hid and wait for over an hour until a hungry CumbreCat went into the trap and touched the trigger to snap the trap door closed.
I brought them to both to our local vet Veronica, and they were neutered at once, They were ready to be picked up by 11:00. I let them recover at home and released them late in the evening.
The female was so happy and very hungry. She started to eat at once.
The male flew out of the carrier box like an arrow into the wild. Free again!”
