NOVEMBER 7, 2021 - TRAPPING REPORT & KITTENS!
On Friday, October 29, 2021, CumbreCats trappers were in Olivos zone. They had agreed with a cat carer-neighbour to capture a pretty young female who was the offsprintg of a long-haired CumbreCat that avoided being trapped last winter. Over the season, she had given birth to kittens but only one survived.
The trap was set at feeding time and prepared with some nice smelly food.
According to trappers, the cat followed the trail of food that led directly into the cage, but only made it halfway before backing out again. Luckily she mustered the courage to enter the trap again and this time ate her way into the back of the trap. With a click the door, the trap was shut. She arrived at the vet's clinic at 9:00 sharp.
Her sterilization went well early in the morning and she was collected again. She rested in a quiet room to recover from the anesthetic then in the evening, she was released back to where she came from. She was welcomed back by the big boss cat of the colony, Mr ginger. After a little lick at her tummy, she started to enjoy her dinner straight away and has been seen since - safe and sound hanging around with her aunt who got sterilized last winter and is still is in good health.
On Wednesday, November 3, 2021 a trapper saw a young black and white CumbreCat, a tomboy, going between two houses in Olivos. He was begging for food. A resident cat at one of the houses decided to welcome the newcomer and Neymar, as he was names, settled into the garden were he as felt safe.
Neymar did not get fed the night before and by early morning at breakfast, he was very hungry. He walked right into the trap within a minutes. By 9:00 he was delivered at the vet's clinic and around noon time was collected. His caretaker was very worried for him post op so she wasn't ready to release him straight into the wild so soon, but instead, late afternoon, fed him and released him into a closed off area of an outdoors terrace. He was setup with access to a litterbox, food and water.
Neymar is doing well now, living in peace within a mini colony near this house, enjoying his meals again!
On Wednesday, November 3, 2021 neighbours in the Lirios area take care of approximately 7-9 CumbreCats. Sadly, the trappers were having a difficult time to get their feeders to let them come over to their homes in order to trap. So, in order that the colonly did not grow any bigger a plan was developed to entice the cats away over to yet another neighbours house with regular feeding. After a few weeks, the CumbreCats started to become regulars and this was the situation the trappers hoped for.
Two traps were dropped off at the new feeding location and the lovely lady was able to get up early in the moring at feeding time to set up the traps. She was also instructed on how setup the trap and the importance of covering the trigger. As it turns out, she was a natural trapper and by the next morning she had two CumbreCats ready to go to the vets.
The following moring, the nice lady was able to trap one more CumbreCat and once more her fabulous husband took the cat to the vets.
This is a perfect example of how success can be achieved with community co operation. Thank you to all invoved in this plan as it proved to be a harmonious balance.
Also on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 the trappers caught a magnificent siamese beauty in the Kalmias zone!
A community cat lover called the trappers when she noticed that a intruder had entered her garden where she was caring for a mummy and 3 kittens. The intruder was a well know white tom and he was eyeballing the mother of the kittens. At this moment, the care-giver called a traper to come over quick and fix a trap.
On the Sunday evening, the mummy gdid not get fed so that she was very hungry on the following trapping morning. She was very tame and couldn´t wait for her food so soon as the trap was put up, she went in but then backed out!
The trapper barely had time to put the food pieces back inside the trap when she entered and gobbled it all but didn't set off the trigger and just left again. The frustrated trapper had to refilled a few more times before she finally went to the end of the trap and the door could becclosed. Her kitten came over to take a look, but the care-giver had to lure them away.
The care-giver remarked that she thought that this female must have a domestic cat who had been abandoned by irresponsible residents, and the trapper agreeed. The cat was a showcat. She was tame and cuddled and wanted to be loved.
Maybe someone wants to adopt this beautiful blue-eye-Lady?
The care-giver volunteered to drive this beauty to the vets and also to let her recoer in a quiet room before being released in the evening. She was then reunited with her kittens and she enjoyed her food with them.
In two months, the trappers will have to trap the kittens for neutering but for now the care-giver will keep an eye on them incase the white macho appears again. This white macho is well known but has no frequent hangout places. Because he is do difficult to trap, the trappers feel that he must be responsible for so many white cats in this area.
Again, this was a wonderful community effort that benefited the neighbourhood and the CumbreCats Control Campaign.
On Thursday, November 4, 2021 a white female tabby CumbreCat in Magnolias who has already had a litter of five kittens was trapped by her care-giver. Just six months ago, she had another litter of 3.
So, now that Mommy is done and can enjoy her retirement. Her kittens are beautiful and tame and looking for loving familes to adopt them.
Magnolias.
