TRAPPING REPORT - OCTOBER 3, 2021

Trapping started bright and early on Monday, September 27, 2021 with head trapper setting up in the Monte Cala zone of Cumbre del Sol

TINA REPORT

"This week I started with a car full of traps, transport boxes and food for luring cats. Some community CumbreCat lovers - Nils & Bodil - informed me last week about a mummy with 3 kittens in Monte Cala who needed to be trapped and neutered. Nils and the neighbours were feeding this little family but had to leave Spain for a while so they sent me fotos of the cats and showed me the feeding place. They have also organised other feeders for cooperation and will support the neutering with their neighbors too.

When I arrived there were two kittens playing near the feeding place and hungry. They ran up to me for food. I couldn´t set up my trap fast enough as they were all around me. One minute later, when the trap door was open, the first cat was in and I could activate the closing. Once the cat was covered it calm down and I could put it into the transportbox and then prepared the trap for the next try.

Three minutes later, the second kitten rushed into the trap. It greedly bolted down the first pieces of food as it went to the end of the trap. Yepp, I could press CLOSE again. Same again, I  calmed it down, then placed it into another so that I could use this trap, once again, for the next one.

But now I had to wait (only :-)) ) 10 minutes during which time I shook a bag of biscuits hoping that the cats would react to the noise. I was lucky. "This time it was the Mummy, a grey beauty, who turned up at the end of the street. I think she smelled the tastey treats and very quickly she also went into the trap  and I closed the door. She was a little bit furious and wanted to escape but the blanket calmed her down too.

Same as before, I prepared the trap for the 3rd kitten. I was really excited hoping that it would appear too or not. I knew this one was shyest. I stayed shaking the biscuit-bag and waited.

Twenty minutes later, finally, it arrived at the feeding point, but there was no bowl, only the trap. Being the shyest she was also the extremely careful one. First, she observed the trap from a safe distance. Then she was closely monotoring me, so that I had to hide myself behind a corner of a house. Then she surrounded it for several times – smelling every corner of the trap. And at last, step by step- she entered the trap for the food pieces. Now I could activate the closing mechanism.

The whole family was trapped. I felt very happy because I think all together it would be easier for them. They were together in the car and off to the vets. They recovered together in a quiet room in my house and finally I released them all together back to their home.

Their gift for me was a great free cat concert in my car on route to the vet. One cat started and then all joined in. I never had heard such a concert ;-))

Late evening, when I released them in their home area, the beauty boy started to eat at once. The others after a few minutes. Since the Mummy was operated on in the late afternoon, she had to stay one night in the clinic. Another team trapper Saskia picked her up and she rested in a very comfortable cage. In the evening, she was reunited with her kittens.

One family done, no further kittens. Thx so much to Nils, who organised a lovely cat feeder and collected money from the neighbors to support the neutering."

Tina was back out again on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 this time in the Begonias zone.

TINA REPORTS

"For this Wednesday trapping, our cat feeder - Manfred - was already informed not to feed in the evening and in the morning. We are always very grateful for this coopertion.

When I drove down to the Begonias feeding place there were at least 10 hungry cats waiting for me. We have neutered the majority of CumbreCats in this zone so I had to look carefully for one that was still needing this snip!

I spotted a black male who was maybe one year old. This macho was making me crazy as he watched me from a great distance. When I tried to come a little closer, he ran away. Maybe he already knows what is in store for him at the vets? Maybe another old black and white macho, which is also on my list, told him what happened to his friends and that all changes after vet visit?

Meanwhile, I discovered an unknown black longhaired beauty who was very shy but hungry. I put the trap closer to her but she hid herself several times, then came out only to disappear again.  I think that she didn´t know what she should do, should she trust or not? After half an hour, she finally decided to enjoy the little food pieces that made a trail up to the trap. Then she look around the trap and finally couldn´t resist the tasty fish. I CLOSED and trap. I wanted to trap the other males too, which need to be done, but construction traffic made this impossible and the cats went away.

At 10:00 the black beauty was at Veronica's and she was fixed at 11:45. I picked her up and let her recover until night. At 20:30 I released her in her home area.
