OCTOBER 31, 2021 - TRAPPING REPORT & DEATHS
Trapping has been a slow starter this season due to all the rain, but on Monday, October 18, 2021 trapper Florence started in the morning about 8:30 full of motivated trapping energy.
After she prepared the trap with newspaper, cloth pins and of course some tasty food pieces she got lucky because Grisounette, a beautiful brown tabby female with 2 kittens was trapped. She brought her to the vet and picked her up when she was ready. The mama recovered until very late evening and was happy to be reunited with her kittens.
3 days later Grisounettes kitten Tigrou was dead. She was hit by a car close her sleeping places in Magnolias. The lifeline was very short for this young kitten 12 weeks. The driver didn't even stop. Imagine killing a kitten?
On this same day, a black cat was hit by car in Camelias and the driver left her on the street.
Nice words were said for the kittens and they were laid to rest in peace.
Once the rain let up, trapper Saskia was out on Friday, October 29, 2021 in the Olivos zone.
She managed to trap a white tabby female that was very ill. It had been weeks of effort, sometimes 3 times per day and with the help of other CumbreCat lovers, so Saskia was grateful to finally get this sick cat to the Veronica the vet.
Unfortunately, Veronica couldn´t help this CumbreCat because she had very bad cancer in her mouth. She had to put the cat to sleep.
On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, trapper Tina was out in the Mnte Cala zone.
TINA REPORTS:
On Tuesday the 26th, I was prepared to trap at least one macho in Monte Cala. A few days before, I took a nice pic of a longhaired macho that I could focus my trapping efforts. I also saw a tabby macho who needs to be done and a black female but stormy and rainy weather made it difficult. Only about 5-7 cats appeared, from normally 20+, and almost all have been fixed in this zone of course.
At 8am I started with prepared traps but the target tabby male was very, very shy and trusted neither the tasty food pieces in the trap nor me. If I only looked from a far distance round the corner, he disappeared in a hurry. After 1 hour I gave up. The fixed CumbreCats were already full because I had to lure them away from the trap with food.
I thought that at a few houses far away should be the long hair cat, but there was no cat like him.
Nevertheless, I prepared the trap with new food pieces and suddenly he appeared. He was careful and let the other cats eat at first.
Every time that I trap in this zone, there is a greedy CumbreCat who dances around me. He is a handsome grey beauty, very social and lovely, but he just can´t get enough food :-))))) He is my personal follower :-)))
I was kept busy trying to lure him and the others away from the trap while the target cat hid himself under my car. O.k. doesn´t matter then I will put the trap close to my car. Longhair ate the first piece at the trap entrance, disappeared under my car and then appeared on the other side looking for the food of the lured cats. O.K. No problem, then I will set up the other trap on this side of my car. He disappeared again under my car, ate the refilled first piece of the trap left –relaxed under my car, ate the first piece of the other trap and repeated this game. For him this was a funny scene but not for me! I like playing with cats but not in this way.
After a while he decided to relax under the next car, always looking as to what the other cat were doing. Quickly, I remove one trap to the other car then refilled it but this time with tuna. And finally, he could not resist. He entered the trap, touched the trigger and was cought.
I dropped him off to Veronica and she also was impressed at his beauty. He will keep his beauty because without his testicles he won't feel like fighting with the other machos! One more happy CumbreCat in this zone.
At 13:30, I picked him up and let him sleep until 18:00 then I wanted to release him but when I arrived at Monte Cala the rain was coming down so heavy that I could not let him go. The downpour was so bad that I couldn't even drive my car so I just waited in my car until the rain calmed down. I took Longhair home and let him sleep, eat and enly a warm blanket. I released him the next morning.
TRIBUTE TO THE CUMBRECATS & KITTENS
