TRAPPING REPORT - FEBRUARY 13, 2021
The trapping team of Tina and Andrea headed out on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. Tina started out in Begonias at 8:00 in the black cat zone. At the beginning there was only one cat in the street. She set up a trap. She turned her back for one minute and she heard the trap of off and she turned around to see a cat already in the trap. Sadly, this cat had an ear tip, so out he went.
The sound of the trap shutting was a clue to other cats that its not a good time to come around and to be careful.
In the meantime, Tina had to lure two young kittens away from the trap with food. After about 35 minutes, a strong boy, who Tina knew and played games with her last week, came over to the trap. Tina had covered the trigger with newspaper and this worked well because the big tom cat stepped on the trigger and was trapped. which washed himself last week in the trap. But this time Tina covered the trigger/shelf with newspaper. And this works excellent. He was trapped very quickly.
Unfortunately the trapper team Andrea & Robert had a punctured tire on their way to Girasoles and had to give up.
Since, no further cats appeared in Begonias, Tina went over and picked up Andrea and her 2 traps and they went back to Girasoles and later also to the tennis zone. However, because of these cats had been fed already – they were not hungry nor nterested in any more food.
At 10.45 Tina and Andrea dropped off the tom cat to Veronica the village vet. He was done at 13:00 and Tina picked him up for recovery in her home and release.
On Tuesday, February 9, 2021 Tina felt lucky and zoomed over the Begonias zone with her traps. She arrived at 8:00 and there were no cats to be seen. She decided to shake a bag of biscuits to draw out the cats and let them know that food had arrived.
She then started to set up the first trap with a female cat appeared. The hungry cat did not hesitate and went directly into the trap and touched the trigger. Tina quickly covered up the cage so that the cat would calm down. Then she had to take the cat out again and move her to a carrier box.
Immediately Tina set up this trap again for the second time because a big macho was wondering up the street searching for food. He marched right up and into the trap, touched the trigger and boom, trapped. It only took two minutes and Tina had no time to take his photo.
After this success, Tina set up the other trap. Not surprisingly, Tina had to wait around a big because the commotion of the trapping noises had chased the other cats away. But, after only 10 minutes another cat came along. This was a green trap and the cats were not familiar with it. This macho was very curious and sniffed it aaround before he entered. Snap! The 3rd cat was trapped.
By 9:10 they all arrived at the vet. At 14.45, Tina picked them up again from and let them reover in ther house till 19:00. All three cats were very happy to jump out the their recovery boxes and back to their friends.
On Tuesday, February 9, 2021, team trapper Andrea was in position at the Pepe La Sal rubbish bins, as the sun was rising.
She remarks, "After a few minutes a large tabby macho, who we have seen many times previously, approached the trap loaded with tasty treats. This time he couldn't resist and was trapped.
Meanwhile, Robert was over in Girasoles. After 30 minutes, he caught a tabby but it had an eartip so was released. After patiently waiting for another thirty minutes, a pretty tortoise female overcame her caution and was trapped.
Robert responds, "We were extremely happy to have caught her, as she has avoided the trap several times previously, and it wouldn't be long until she was expecting another litter of kittens. She is mum to many of the young cats in this colony."
Both cats were delivered to Veronica the vet at 09:15 and collected at 14:00. After relaxing for several hours, they were released safely to their home territories.
Andrea concludes, " Now there are two more cats who with have a quieter life in the sunshine to look forward to."
On Wednesday, February 10, 2021, Tina made her way over to Magnolias by 8:30 to where a colony of 8 - 10 cats were being fed. She started to prepare the trap but only post-neutered cats were showing up so she had to lure them away. Eventually, a cat decided to approach the trap but remained carefully away in the bushes.
The cat sat and waited. The trap was loaded with wet food but this cat was not interested. Tina finally added some tuna and his nose raised up but he didn't budge! Tina hid herself away from the trap and the bored cats and pretended to consumed by her mobile phone. This made him calm and he strolled over to the trap and ate the tuna but did not launch the trigger to the door.
Tina responds, "I tried to cover the trigger with a newspaper although it was so windy. I decided to set the trap up again in a less windy spot. I load it up with tuna and the cat, a macho, was detailed about another tuna snack and entered the trap and the trigger went off and down came the door."
In the end, it took Tina an hour and a half for this one cat. She dropped him off at the village vet. He was ready for pick up at 13;30 and Tina took him home to recover. At 18:00, Tina released him and he was very happy and rushed out of the box.
