TRAPPING REPORT - JANUARY 31, 2021
As we round up the first month of 2021, Monday, January 25 found our trapper Tina up early and heading over to the Begonias zone.
According to Tina, "Even though Cumbre Cats has already had 6 or more cats from this zone neutered, there are still at least another 6-8 cats that need to be trapped"
She reported on this day of trapping by stating, "The first black macho appeared very quickly and was interested in the tasty food in the trap but obviously he was very trap-experienced because he ate all the food without ever touching the trigger. He was very satisfied."
Tina saw another few cats appear so she decied to wait around from far away to see what would happen. She concluded that the cats were not hungry, even though they had not been fed since the morning before.
She contined, "Finally a young female came along, together with her 2 kitten, which are to be trapped soon. She couldn't´t resist the fine food offered in the trap and went in, touched the trigger and was trapped."
Tina was very happy about trapping this sexy lady because she had heard from a regular walker-lady that 4 very strong machos were stalked the female for the past few days. Tina concluded that this neutering was just in time.
Next, Tina witnessed something she had never seen before. As she recalls, "A big black macho entered the trap with a big leap, eat all the food, sit down, relax and clean himself and then left the trap after a few minutes without getting caught.
Tina dropped off the female to Veronica and picked her up at around 14:00 Then the young female recovered until 19:00 when Tina released her back to her kittens.
On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, team trapper Saskia headed out early in the morning to the Olivos zone, to join one of the wonderful cat caretakers / feeders who was able to pinpoint the cats that still need neutering.
Their eyes were on a beautiful young long haired cat. She was a real princess, and luckily she walked into the trap, continued to enjoy the goodies even after noise of the spring.
She was delivered at the vet's shortly after 9:00. By early evening, she was released again at the same place where she was caught and she was eager to join her friends for dinner!
Team trappers Andrea & Robert headed out on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
Andrea filed this report:
"As the sun was rising, we were in our positions. Robert in Girasoles and me by the rubbish bins at Pepe La Salle.
At Pepe there were 3 cats who showed very little interest in the trap that was loaded with goodies. They seemed to be waiting patiently for the man who normally feeds them. He was coming later as we needed the cats to be hungry!
After an hour a very large macho entered and triggered the trap. Sadly, he was already eartipped so I had to let him go. The other cats were very spooked about this so I realised it was best to try my luck elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Robert was having a few problems in Girasoles with noisy construction work and loose dogs. I moved to his position and we waited, and waited. The last time for delivery to Veronica the vet is 11am - 11:30 and by now we had been trying for three hours. Cumbre cats are getting cleverer by the day!
Luckily, just as we were about to give up, a beautiful young ginger male triggered the trap. He simply could not resist the sardines on offer!
All went very smoothly at the vets and our little boy was released back in his patch at 15:00. As we drove away he was enjoying the sunshine and the start of his new, easier life."
It was 8:10 when she arrived. Her goal was to trap the other kittens that needed to be neutered.
Tina explains, "Like an arrow I fetched the trap from downstairs – with the same food inside – and set the trap very closely to him. Then I hide a little bit away. I heard the clack. It took only 3 minutes until he was trapped. In the trap he was very very angry. But I covered it with a blanket and he calmed down."
Two other team trappers, Andrea and Robban, were also trapping nearby and they were also successful. It was decided that Tina would drop the cats to the village vet and Andrea & Robban would pick them up again when ready. Then all three cats could recover at Andrea's until ready to release.
could not resist. It was a very pretty ginger young male. Robert continued to wait at the other place until the first cats appeared. They were more carefully and watched the whole situation. But finally the tasty smell of prawns lured a young multi-coloured female and by 8:30, she was trapped."
This team then rallied with Tina who trapped a cat near the tennis court and it was decided that Tina would drop all three cats off at the village vet.
At 14:00, Andrea got the call from our Vet and then picked them up the trio of cats for recovery in her house.
The cats slept until 19:00 and then all 3 were released at their home place.
