TRAPPING REPORT - DECEMBER 20, 2020
The Trapping week started on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. Tina was up and out by 8:00 in the Magnolias zone where she prepared 3 traps but only a ear-tipped cat appeared. The cats all know now that the trappers are out to get them and their 6th cat sense is in alarm mode.
Tina waited patiently and fed the neutered one. The feeding noise lured a grey female mother with many kittens to Tina. The cat watched her from under the car.
Tina tried to coax her into the trap with a bit of wet fishy cat food, which she enjoyed. Tina then prepared the trap with this food and the female entered, ate all the food, and satified left the cage.
So, Tina restocked the trap with a sardine but the female showed no interest. So Tina tried some tuna, but that did not work either. So, Tina tried a biscuit, and the female cat took a tiny bite and disappeared again.
The last attempt Tina poured out the sauce from the wet food into the trap dish and the cat got so crazy at the smell that she followed her noise right into the trap and down cane the door.
One female crafty cat took Tiny 1,5 hours, 4 times preparing the trap and 5 different snacks! Unfortunately no other cats appeared for food so trapping day was done.
At 10 pm Tina dropped the cat to the vet, then picked her up at 13:30. Tina let her relax in her home until 18:00. When she was returned, the female cat made a mad dash home.
On Friday, December 18, 2020 team trapper Saskia ventured out into the olivos zone again. When her car pulled up, 4 cats came out of hiding to greet her. Luckily, 2 out of the 4 cats were not ear-tipped and hence needed neutering.
Trapping these cats with food snacks is not easy because the kind neighbours feed them so the cats are not hungry enough to head for the trap. However, eventually a small white and grey female wondered into the trap and found herself caught.
Saskia was off to the vets' around 9.30. She picked the female up again and brought home to recover and around 19:00 the female was released to join her friends for dinner time.\
