JUNE 23, 2023 - TRAPPER & RAINBOW REPORTS
A KITCHEN CAPER
Trapper Report:
"A few months ago, a large white macho CumbreCat with a grey tail moved into the Olivos zone. He has made a habit of visiting my kitchen window to beg for food. At first only in the evenings, but he started showing up in the mornings too, which provided a good opportunity to trap him. He is mostly white, and his ear was already showing signs of skin cancer.
I had planned to trap another cat, a white and grey macho nearby, but when this very large white male showed up very early in the morning, I could not resist trying my luck with him.
I prepared the trap with some smelly food, and gradually he plucked up enough courage to come in through the kitchen window, after nibbling on the counter, down to the floor where the trap was set. I had to make myself invisible, but I could hear him eating and after 15 minutes of rooting for him, he went all the way into the trap.
When I heard the click, I covered the whole trap with a big dark towel. We had to wait another hour and then drove to the vet where he arrived at 9 am and was quickly operated on, both the castration and the treatment of his ear cancer. By 11am he was back home resting in a dark room and by 5pm he was wide awake and ready for his release.
We hope to see him again soon, even if he will avoid visiting the kitchen for a while."

ANOTHER HAPPY FAMILY STORY
Trapper Report:
"A lovely couple, the caretakers of CumbreCats from the Dalias area, are now watching over a mother and her kittens.
The story goes that this young mother first appeared in their garden in mid-April. She must have known they were cat lovers. Shortly after she gave birth in a very hidden spot in the rocks, she came to them 2 or 3 times to feed. One of the carers managed to gain her trust and then she came regularly.
Finally, weeks later, she moved a little closer with her kittens and showed them to the caregivers. Step by step, the carers managed to approach her and get closer to her.
The caretakers were able to feed the kittens with special kitten food. And last week, the mother cat moved permanently into the garden with her kittens. As the kittens were doing very well on their own, we could start with the plan to catch the mother.
When I arrived in the morning with the traps, the mother cat did not trust me, and she did not like the look of the traps either. I prepared everything so that the caretakers only had to lure her into the trap with pieces of food. When she saw the carer, her tail immediately lifted, she started to greet him and cuddled with him.
I hid behind the garden wall and did not dare breathe or take a step. The caretaker gave her a spoonful of food in front of the trap, then at the entrance, then in the middle of the trap. Finally, she went into the end of the trap, and I was able to press the close button.
We immediately covered the trap and I dropped her off at Veronica's at 9am. Two hours later she was operated, and the caretaker picked her up. She knows his voice and felt more comfortable when she woke up. He let her sleep in a quiet room and then released her to her family.
The three kittens are on my list to capture in September. A very good story of cooperation and results."

SPECIAL TREATMENT AND ATTENTION
Trapper Report:
"One of our CumbreCats from the Begonia Zone was in and out of the vets for special treatments. The first visit was for parasites and then she was fine. But now one of the carers noticed the cat did not look well and took her back to Veronica, the vet. On examination, the cats' mouth and throat were badly inflamed. Veronica also took an x-ray to rule out a tumour. Veronica injected antibiotics and painkillers.
Now a holidaymaker is taking care of this CumbreCat until she leaves Spain, and then the caretaker of the zone will continue the observations.
It's great that we now have cat-loving tourists joining in our efforts for the CumbreCats. "

RAINBOW BRIDGE
SAYING GOOD BYE IN MAGNOLIAS
Trapper Report
The caregiver in the Magnolia Zone was trying to help her beloved Oscar, a CumbreCat whom she and her whole family loved. She watched over him as he ate less and less each day. She carefully lifted him into a transport box and took him to Veronica, our vet. After examination, it was found that Oscar had a tumour and was suffering from cancer. Oscar was put to sleep to end his pain. He will be missed.

LEFT FOR DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
Trapper Report:
On 8 June 2023, a black and white kitten, about 3-4 months old, was hit by a car and left to die in the middle of the road. I will never understand why the driver did not stop and see if anything could be done for the little one, and if not, then put the little creature in the grass by the side of the road. Enough space to stop ... enough opportunities to give the dead creature a little last dignity
R.I.P. dear little one
Call or WhatsApp ARTURO from Townhall or the Local Police ..... it takes only a few minutes to inform them.

MONTE CALA SAYS GOODBYE TO BALOU
Trapper Report
Readers may remember Balou, the fluffy cat who was abandoned in the Monte Cala area in September 2021. We caught him and had him neutered. Gradually he joined the CumbreCats and became well integrated.
However, last month his paws were not well and we received very good treatment from our vet, but he could not fully recover as his weakened immune system caused the inflammation in his paws.
A couple of very concerned residents informed us, but it was not so easy to trap him a 3rd time. He was afraid of the traps and strangers. In the meantime, the keepers gave him some medication, but it did not work.
Then he appeared to another keeper and she could even touch him a little. She called me, and we decided that she would try again. It took less than 5 minutes and she had caught him. She managed to put him in the metal transport box by herself.
Veronica, our vet, examined him, but she could only end his suffering.
R.I.P. Sweet soul.
