HELPING THE HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITY CATS

Trapper's Report:

"A few days ago I saw a new 'face' in the midst of the usual 'morning cat choir performance' at 6.45am. A shy cat who kept a bit in the background. I saw her again the next morning and also the next but one. She did not look very well, and I decided to capture her, which was a really easy as she was very hungry and very slow. At this point I did not see that her ear was clipped, so I took her to Veronica's to have her neutered, saying that I was not sure about her general health.

Well, the poor girl had two ulcers under her tongue, but she was clipped! So Veronica gave her antibiotics, cortisone and a tablet for worms, and I was able to take her back. I decided to call her Maria Catharina, because that's my sister's name, and because I caught the cat on my sister's 65th birthday. Yesterday I saw Maria Catharina sunbathing in the garden, and she looks much better. I think she has chosen a new street and a new garden!

Chapeau once again to the wonderful women at the Benitachell veterinary hospital."

WORKING PERFECT TOGETHER

Trapper's Report:

"One of our very lovely caretakers and a real animal lover, had contacted me to say that she discovered 3 or 4 cats in her garden that needed to be trapped.

She had already got them used to coming to eat, but only in the evening, which is not good for trapping because the vet is already closed then.

Anyway, I went to her and sure enough, there were 3 black cats and a pretty white macho that needed to be trapped.

When I arrived the macho was relaxing in the sun but not interested in food. The black cats were very shy. Unfortunately, all attempts to move the feeding time to the morning failed, so I prepared the trap for the evening. I loaded it with mackerel and wet fish food, but no cat came by.

The next evening we had bad windy weather , quite a storm and the cats stayed in their safe places. Nevertheless, the trap was well set, and we waited for 3 hours until we saw a black female go in. The caretakers had also kept an eye on the trap and covered it immediately.

I put her in the overnight cage and back in the transport box in the morning. At 9 am I was already at Veronica, the village vet. At 11:30 the cat was already ready, and another caretaker picked her up for me.

The CumbreCat spent the afternoon recovering in my house and around 6pm I released her into her home.

Next week we will continue trapping in this garden!

FYI: I replaced the back door of the trap with plexiglass, which I bought at a hardware shop and easily cut to size with a Japanese saw. To fix the door so that the cats can not push it up, I used a simple lock.

Why did I do this?

Most CumbreCats know all the traps very well, and it sometimes seems that they pass on all the information about trapping and how to avoid being caught.

However, with this clear plexiglass door, they think they can see right through to the end and the illusion is that they can escape if necessary."

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Trapper's Report

"For the driver, who hit a cat in our community, and drove away... Don't you know that animals have feelings? Don't you know that animals feel pain like humans do? Don't you know that someone's heart is breaking because of your horrible neglect?

How would you feel if someone hit you and left you on the road? You are still breathing!!  You have terrible pain!!! But you can not move by yourself!!!

Cars and people see you but just drive on by, and you can't call an emergency!! You can do NOTHING!! You can only wait until someone with a heart comes alone who is willing to help you.

Fortunately, one of our caretakers, a great cat lover lady and always supporting the CumbreCats came along and stopped immediately. She wrapped the poor cat in a blanket and drove to Veronica. The only help that Veronica could do, was to put her to sleep to end her suffering.

She looked very well cared. She was neutered but had no chip. R.I.P. pretty soul."
