SEPTEMBER 24, 2022 - TRAPPING & RAINBOW REPORT & SURPRISE
"The whole is more than the sum of its parts." - Aristotle
CumbreCats may seem like a whole, but in reality it is made up of many working parts, characterised by cooperation.
SESSION IS A SNAP
For example, on 5 June 2022, for example, one of our team trappers was in Kalmias with the cages and thanks to good cooperation with one of the caretakers, a trapping operation was quickly completed.
Trapper Report:
"A young female was hungry and quickly entered the trap, touched the trigger and was caught. I took the CumbreCat to the vets and picked her up after her surgery. Then I let her recover at my home. Then in the evening I released her."
TWO IS ALWAYS BETTER
On 7 September 2022, one of our caregivers took on the role of trapper in the Magnolia Zone.
She had been trapping young CumbreCats in her care. On that day she managed to trap a female and of course take her to the vets etc.
And on 9 September 2022, she caught a male again, the brother of the first youth.
What fantastic results. It is just wonderful to see who the kindest people in the community are and are willing to do what is necessary to support our efforts. Of course, we are also very grateful to the funders who make it all possible ;)
MARRIED COUPLE MAKES GREAT
Speaking of loving CumbreCat people, we have a lovely couple in Lirios
Trapper Report:
"Weeks ago, a CumbreCat mother brought her babies to the safety of the garden in Lirios. The couple watched over the family and kept them healthy. However, it was time to catch the mother.
A trapper from our team visited the house in Lirios and helped capture her. She also took the mother to the vet and released her back into the garden.
We are very happy that no further pregnancy is possible."
WATCHING OVER
Over in the Olivos Zone, two of our trappers were called on 14 September 2022 about an emaciated CumbreCat with bloody paws.
Trapper Report:
"One of our top trappers had already tried to catch this cat several times but had no luck.
As the trapper got very close to the cat, we finally decided to try a very unusual method: a laundry basket. The trapper very quickly put the basket over the cat while it was eating. She then had to fix the basket very strongly.
The difficult part was now to get her into a transport box. We covered both sides of the basket with other cardboard boxes and lifted the basket a little on the short side and opened the sliding door at the same time. We were so happy that it worked.
She had to stay in the big cage overnight. The next day one of the trappers took her to ALIAGA because Veronica was not available. She was given injections of long term antibiotics and cortisone. The same evening, the other trapper released her. This CumbreCat needs to be monitored further because although all tests were negative, she is still not doing very well.
RAINBOW BRIDGE REPORT
On 9 September 2022, a very old and not very healthy CumbreCat was seen hanging around the Kalmias area. One of our team trappers tried to capture him several times, but as he was not interested in food, it was difficult.
Trapper's report:
"On that Friday, our trapper saw that it was very weak and eventually got trapped. The trapper took him to the vet, and she saw that he had no teeth. His mouth was also very inflamed and she could see no way to treat him. It was decided that he had to be put down to end his pain and suffering.
Thank you again for working so well with Isolina from Gatos Felizes in Benitachell."
Again in the spirit of collaboration, Gatos Felizes of Benitachell asked us for help on 16 September 2022 to capture a very sick cat that could no longer move well.
Trapper's report:
"A tourist had accidentally spotted the cat and took photos. I informed one of our team trappers who wanted to help. She had never seen the cat before, but wanted to take a look first. And you will not believe it, 2 hours later the cat showed up. It was not very hungry, but ate a little and disappeared.
The next morning the trapper prepared the trap and hoped that the sick cat would reappear. And indeed it did come, entered the trap and was caught.
The trapper me that the cat looked at her with pleading eyes as if to say, "Yes, please help me."
The trapper took her to Veronica, and she confirmed that the sick cat had to be put down so that it would no longer have to suffer.
Isolina from Gatos Felizes clarified this with the town hall.
It's always so heartbreaking when we have to do this."
