ANNIVERSARY SUMMARY REPORT by Head Trapper Tina

Firstly we would like to thank all the cat lovers, fosterers, caregivers, caretakers, and everyone else on Cumbre del Sol and from all over who help us in any way. We could not achieve such success without your fantastic support.

* Since we started in 06/2020

  • trapped cats: 241
  • females: 106
  • males: 109
  • 5 kittens rescued and from Cumbre cat lovers adopted
  • some cats only needed treatment against parasites, sometimes wounds must be treated / others only trapping help
  • 15 Put to Sleep by Cumbre Cats trapping group
  • 5 Put to Sleep by caretakers, done by their own
  • at least 5 wounded or ill cats, who disappeared before we could help them.

So we have lost a total of 25 cats to illness. This is of course a great help because their suffering could be ended - for us always a heartbreaking part of helping animals, but part of our job.

* CumbreCats hit and killed by cars that we know of:

NOTE: The cat you kill could be a feral cat or someone else's pet. They are all loved, so do your best to drive safely. Next time it could be a child. Always alert a neighbour or the police if you run over a cat. It may just be injured. In any case, do not let it die alone.

Hit by car total: at least 22

  • MonteCala: 5
  • Main road Lirios / Olivos: 9
  • Girasoles: 3
  • Dalias/Camelias: 3
  • Enzimas: 1
  • Pueblo: 1

Questions?

If you have any questions about missing cats please email CumbreCats@gmail.com

Q: Why are cats missing and new cat appearing?

A: We ask you not to worry because our entire team of caretakers / feeders / trappers / lovers / all keep tract of the CumbreCats. In these 2 years we have observed how the cats move from one feeding station to another, often to a private garden, where they feel safer and get better food, especially during the holiday periods. And the cats move to where the tourists are if they get better snacks there. They then return to their usual feeding place or look for another one. A big thank you to the cat lovers on Cumbre del Sol who inform us about new situations and then work with us.

Q: What does TNR mean?

A: TNR means trap, neuter, and release. When we trap and remove a cat to be neutered, we return that cat exactly to its home area.

Q: How long are the cats gone?

A: The males need about 3-4 hours to recover (in a quiet room of the caretaker or trapper) until they are fully awake. The females sometimes have to stay overnight in a night cage with toilet, food, and water.

This always depends on the temperature of the season and of course their alertness. In winter, they always stay one night at someone's home and in the summer we can release them in the evening.

CONCLUSION:

In summer, when temperatures are high, it is always more difficult to set traps. The adult cats are less hungry, the kittens are still too young to trap, but they are on our schedule in September/October. Trapping of adult cats continues and funds are always needed.

In conclusion, we can say that we are very successful. Imagine that a single uncastrated female gives birth to 12 babies in the first year. That means we have 67 more cats in the second year. We spayed about 100, so that would be 670 more cats. Do you understand how important TNR is? But we still have to catch some females who have given birth to kittens, and these kittens are on our list in the autumn when they are old enough.

EARLY TRAPPER CATCHES THE CAT

This report from one of our team trappers on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from the Camelias zone.

TRAPPER REPORT

“In summer, we get up extra early to catch the cat. The day started at 7 am in Camelias, where we had a female in our sights. Her sisters had been spayed in the spring, but this one had managed to escape so far.

The feeder had been informed and had not fed the cats the night before, so when I arrived I found them ready for breakfast and hungry. I set the trap, whereupon the girl let out a loud hiss and continued to watch me from a distance.

Instead, her boyfriend showed up with a good appetite and interest in the trap. He was there by 7:15 and was delivered to the vet shortly after 9. The surgery went swiftly, and he was released back in the late afternoon with his friends in the same spot.

No further offspring are expected from this handsome mini panther.”
