OCTOBER 15, 2021 - TRAPPING REPORT, FOOD DONATIONS & KITTEN ADOPTIONS
Trapping this week took place on Friday, October 15, 2021 with team trapper Tina with her trap out in the Kalmias zone of Cumbre del Sol.
TINA REPORTS:
"The scheduled trapping on Friday was complicated but ended successfully.
This adventure started about 2 weeks ago when I was messaged by a cat lover named Sylvia who proceeded to tell me about a cat family that had started to visit her garden. There was a beautiful mother and 4 kittens and Syliva sent me some photos.
However, the family were not regular in the garden so it was planned that Sylvia start to feed them in the same place daily and develop a routine. Hence, little by little, the extremely shy mother would show up with her kittens to feed.
A plan was finally estabished to reduce their food in the evening and nothing in the morning so that I could get them in them in the trap. I asked Florence to assit me in case I trapped the whole family then my car would be full of transport boxes and I would need help. As it turned out the kitten were definitely too young being only about 3-4 months, so Florence went home.
I set up the trap and decorated it with little pieces of their usual food and right away a kitten entered the trap for the food while the mother tried to reach in from outside the cage to grab a snack. The mummy was so nervous and reacted to every little noise. I moved just a tiny bit and they both went and hid.
We tried to lure the kitten away from the trap with a bowl but the mummy followed and ate from the bowl. Sylvia moved the bowl away to a bigger distance but this was not attractive for the cats.
Meanwhile, it felt like I refilled the trap nearly 1000 times with no luck. Every time, it was the kitten inside and the mother outside. Then they started to clean themselves and I thought, 'Oh no, could they be already full???' After 1 hour without success I had to try something else!
I opened a tine of fishy food and whispered in my cat words to them to come closer. The mother seem to be really fascinated about this fishy smell and taste. I started to tease them with pieces in the trap with some in a bowl for the kitten but I got the same result... kitten inside and mother outside.
Eventually, the kitten seemed to be full while the mommy was wild for more. Quickly, I set a trail of 10-12 mini pieces of wet food in the trap- from the entrance up to the end - and finally the mummy went inside gobbling and I could activate the closing command button on the trap.
Immediately, I covered the trap and calmed her down. By 10:30 I had her to Veronica the vets and meanwhile Sylvia gave the other kittens a big bowl of fresh food.
At 13:00 the mummy was finished her operation and Sylvia and her husband picked her up to let her recover in a quiet room. At nighttime, 22:00 Sylvia released her and she was very happy to be reunited with their kittens.
I want to thank this animal loving family on behalf of CumbreCats for their fantastic cooperation and their very generous donation of 100€. Thank you so much. In 3-4 months, we will trap and neuter the kittens.
