TRAPPING REPORT - MAY, 29, 2021

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SUMMARY

IT HAS BEEN A PRODUCTIVE YEAR. Together with the fantastic support and help from our community cat lovers, the CumbreCats Trapping Team has achieved greatness.

Here are our numbers - Cats Trapped, Neutered & Returned

  • Begonias: 18
  • Encimas: 10
  • Girasoles: 21
  • Magnolias: 14
  • Monte Cala: 28
  • Olivos: 32
  • Pueblos: 15
  • Kalmias: 1
  • Lirios: 6

TOTAL - 145 CATS

Regrettably, we had to put 6 cats to sleep because of sever injuries. We did not want them to suffer.

Joyfully, we had a least 10 kittens adopted. So life continues.

In every area of Cumbre del Sol, we have found cat loving folks who help to take care of the cats and this confirms an exemplary humanitarian way of life. In some areas, micro-communities were founded and as a group effort privately pay for medical treatments and other helpful solutions. This way, many more cats have been helped with their survival needs.

TOURIST SEASON is not a good time to trap CumbreCats because of cars, people and noise. Also, because of the heat, the cats move to shadier locations and do not come out.

Surely, we will have some pregnant cats over the summer season so we will start trapping again or in September/October. Of course, we will be available for trapping emergencies!

FEEDING FELINE COLONIES

On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, our Townhall of Benitachell, organised a workshop, which was given by the Cinco Hocicos, an association for the defense of animal rights through education, information and reporting.

At the end of the workshop, the mayor, Miguel Ángel García, and Isa Garrido, health councilor awarded each of our CumbreCats volunteer trappers with certified diplomas. In addition, after completing the remaining three hours of online training, the CumbreCats volunteer trappers will receive an official accreditation as collaborators in cat colony management.

EMERGENCY RESCUE

On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, trappers Florence and Emma had a request to trap a 7 month-old black and white male kitten whose owner had returned to the UK without the kitten after having tried unsuccessfully to trap him.

Emma reports:

"The trap we used was the remote control one. The bait was tuna. We found out on the day that there was another black cat that was also being fed by new owners, a lovely French couple who kindly let us set the trap in the garden. So, we had to trap both and check that the black cat had been spayed.

We were very lucky and the black cat with the curly tail walked straight into the trap almost immediately! We saw that his ear was clipped, so we put him in another cage. We set up the trap again to wait for our kitten. Florence and I hid behind a wall and waited. The black/white kitten appeared but was very cautious. He took the food that was at the entrance of the trap and ate it outside! He then tried to get the tuna at the back of the cage from outside but couldn't. Eventually, he darted into the cage to get the tuna halfway in and rushed out! Florence and I thought he wouldn't go back in but a few minutes later he did and we shut the door.

The black and white kitten is now with Izzy at Cat Kingdom in Benitachell. He is waiting to be sent to England. We are very proud of our success!!"
