TRAPPING REPORT - APRIL 9, 2021

GOOD NEWS & SAD NEWS
This week started on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 with Tina the trapper having a great start to our mission after the tourist packed Easter Holidays. A Big Congratulation to Tina's newest trainee, Luc who is 4 years of age. Tina likes to start them young. Humanity is good to learn at any age!

TINA REPORTS:

At 9:00, I was at my trapping appointment with Ieva and her 4 years old son Luc.

When I arrived, the first black/white female cat was already waiting for food. Ieva and I realized that we must hurry up to finalize the preparation of the trap with food. Ieva brought the food that the cats normally eat and her son Luc put the little food pieces into the trap. Very quickly I set up the first trap in the garden and Luc watched from the kitchen windows and reported to us what is going on.

It took 4 minutes then the cat appeared, ate the first piece, left, returned and tried to get the food from outside. Quietly, we opened the door so that Ieva could put some fresh anchovies inside because this cat was fascinated by this food. We returned on tiptoe because the cat had entered the trap again and we don´t want to disturb her. Then Luc told us that she had escaped the trap again!

Then it was the same play again whereby we opened the door quietly and returned on tiptoes because the cat had entered the trap a second time. We waited in the kitchen and finally at 9:15 the cat touched the trigger and was caught.

After I put the covered trap in my car and came back with the next trap, our next cat was already waiting for food. We repeated the same procedure as before. However, this little one was so confident and we watched the trapping in all phases - 1. try and get the food from outside, but she couldn't manage this, so she went inside, 2. ate the first piece then the 3. ate the 2nd piece and finally the 3rd big piece she touch the trigger. At 9:25 the door was closed and the cat was trapped and covered.

I put the 2nd cat in my car and returned with the remote controlled cage. An the already neutered cat appeared with an non neutered cat from around the corner. Ieva fed the neutered cat a little distance away as I set the trap in active mode. And then a fluffy youngster came closer to the trap looking for food. First step in and ate and second step in and ate. Luc kept his finger crossed. Ieva and I were also so excited and when the cat was at the other end of the trap and eating,  I pressed the close button.

At 9:45, I was on my road to Veronica the village vet, who is the wonder women that we volunteer our time for to conduct this campaign. The morning concluded with 3 females cat (not one was pregnant) and they were operated on so that I picked them up again at 14:30. They all spent their recovery in Ieva's house. They slept in calm atmosphere until 20:00 .

Then Luc, our youngest helper released all cats to their home area.

AND ONCE AGAIN, this cat loving family supported the campaign with a further 100€ GIFT CERTIFICATE. Thank you so much for your help and support again!!💘💗💖💕💓

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, trapper Andrea got an early start in the Olivos zone.

ANDREA REPORTS:

The lovely cat feeder in the Olivos zone needed help trapping a young male, who was new on the block. I set up the trap and we waited patiently. I was extremely grateful that this colony are so trusting of their feeder, and she was able to distract all the cats that are already neutered! This time we were successful, however not with a macho, but a beautiful young female.

I collected the cat from the vets early in the afternoon. She could recover for a few hours in our warm apartment. I was just about to leave home to release her when I saw that there were two large dogs loose in the area. So, for her safety, we decided to keep her overnight. She was released early in the morning. Later the same afternoon I saw her looking fine. 💗

On Thursday, April 8, 2021, trappers Andrea, Robert and Saskia were alerted to the Olivos zone because of BAD NEWS

ANDREA REPORTS:

We were alerted by a caring neighbour that there was a un neutered male cat who was injured in Olivos.
We took action as soon as possible and with our trapper colleague Saskia, and resident Bernabe, we were able to successfully trap this poor creature.

The X-ray examination by Veronica our vet was very serious and the condition of the cat was confirmed. He had a broken back leg, two broken front legs and a broken rib cage.

Veronica could see that he had been suffering for some time, after being hit by a car.

Poor cat! Can you imagine his pain and suffering!

He is now at rest in Cat Heaven and out of his misery.

PLEASE remember this and SLOW DOWN!
There are FAR TOO MANY people who drive far too fast around our community.
