TRAPPING REPORT - APRIL 3, 2021
THE LUCKY 7 - The Push is On to get the trapping done before the tourists arrive, which as we know from last year, upsets the cats and they stay at home.
The trapping started week with the Trapping team of Andrea and Robert who went out on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
Andrea reports, "Another early start and our first stop was at Pepe La Sal. Just two cats in sight, and both already fixed. So, after a half of an hour, we moved to Girasoles.
A gang of hungry cats were waiting for us, but we recognised all but one as being already trapped and fixed. We tried to distract them with food a little way from the trap, and they all seemed to be happy and enjoying the sunshine.
A few minutes later, a pretty female, which we have been trying to trap for weeks, turned up. Within minutes she entered the trap.
Now, her friends were all spooked so we moved onto meet Tina who was busy with the Community Cat feeder - Manfred. Just as we arrived, a handsome macho went into her trap, and shortly afterwards we were on our way to Veronica the vet.
On arrival at the vets, Veronica inspected the male more closely and discovered he was already castrated. The cut in his ear was very hard to spot. We drove him back to his patch and he was very glad to be released again!
The female was collected several hours later. After recovering in our warm apartment, she was returned to her home territory in Girasoles. We look forward to seeing her again, healthy and happily enjoying a better life. It really is a wonderful feeling, to see the cats who we've helped previously, looking so content and well. 💓
On Monday, March 29, 2021, trapper Tina was out in the Lirios zone.
Tina reports: I started 8:30am in a the garden of a very friendly cat lover lady who feeds between 5 and 8 feral cats. But perhaps because of the clock change and daylight saving time, there were no cat around. Gratefully, I could wait very comfortably in the kitchen of Ieva with excellent sight lines into their garden.
The cats are accustomed to hear Ieva voice and they trust her. It took a long time until the first cat appeared although Ieva called them different times. A shorthair black young lady was at first not interested in the food pieces in the trap, because she preferred the full tin of wet food, that we forgot in front of the door. Very fast, I fetch the tin inside and moved one trap to the door. After 10 minutes, we heard the usual clack of the gate closing. I hurried outside and covered the trap to calm her down and put her in the car.
I then moved the other trap to the same place and disappeared into the kitchen. Only 5 minutes later we heard the next clack. I rush outside and saw a really huge macho who wanted to escape. He raged in the trap and needed time to calm down, even with the blanket.
Meanwhile, the already fixed mummy appeared, looking for food. Ieva lured her away from the trap with food. The focus now was on a fluffy black female who was dancing around and ever so clever, the girl tried to get the food with her paw from outside the cage. Once more the neutered female entered the remote controlled trap but of course we let her eat.
Ieva again added some food pieces in the trap and now the fluffy blackie started to enter the trap. We were so excited, as was Ieva's 4 years old son. Finally, the cats was completely inside, so I pressed the close button and the cat was trapped.
Just in time, I arrived to our partner the vet Veronica at 11am. At 13:45 I picked them up and dropped them to Ieva. She and her family cooperated in such a good way. The cats could recover in a quite warm room in her house surrounded with familiar noises and voices until they were released. The macho was returned at 19:30pm and the females at 21:00. Ieva's son helped to return the cats and because they raced home, Ieva could not snap a photo.
A BIG THANK YOU TO Ieva and Luc who not only co operated with the trapping but bought the gift certificate to pay for the neutering. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION!!
On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, Tina was out in the Monte Cala zone.
Tina Reports: For this trapping morning, the cat feeders were informed not to feed, so that the hungry cats would come out. I started, due to the daylight saving time, at 9:00.
Florence, a new trapping member of our trapping team accompanied me for some training. She needed to get the necessary trapping instructions, some tricks and tips on how to manage the different traps, and what kind of luring food is helpful.
In the Monte Cala zone, we have already neutered 24 cats and we knew that 4 more younger cats were old enough to be trapped and neutered.
When we arrived, the cats were so hungry that they all danced around the prepared trap. We were very happy about this situation and one that we had our sights on entered the trap only after a short while, triggered the door and was trapped. It was a beautiful light grey tabby female.
We prepared at once the next trap in the same way with a little piece of sardine and wet food, placed at the entrance to the trap and again a little piece on the trigger and more at the end of the trap. The cat quickly ate the fist 2 pieces and continued on to the last piece. So, within 5 minutes later the next cat was trapped. This time a a little longhair Bengal youth. All others ran away and hide themselves.
After the second "clack" sound, it took nearly 40 minutes until the cats appeared again. They were spooked ant kept a fixed distance. So, I decided to give them biscuits to lure them closer and and see if the the non neutered youngsters were around. And indeed, two were in between the already fixed group.
I gave them several biscuits and at the same prepared time the remote controlled trap with biscuits, sardines and a little wet food. However, another neutered cat was interested in this and ate it all.
I refilled the trap and made a biscuit trail again outside of the trap. They were forced to come again because they were hungry. And finally at 10:18 another young tabby entered the trap. I used the same system of little pieces leading to the big one at the end of the trap, then I pressed "close".
It was already quite 10:30, and all 3 youngsters were calm in Florence's car, covered with blankets, when she dropped them off to Veronica. Florence picked them up and they all recovered in a quiet room at Florence's home until 21:00. Then she released them to their homes.
I WANT TO WISH A WARM WELCOME to Florence, as a new trapper in our team!!💗
