TRAPPING REPORT - APRIL 17, 2021
AGAIN, GOOD & BAD NEWS!!
There was only one day of trapping this week and it was on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
Tina and Florence started their morning at different points around Cumbre at 8:00.
TINA REPORTS:
The weather was fine with no wind nor rain. The cat feeders were informed a few days ago which day would be trapping day and hence not to feed their cats. Florence set up her trap in the storage area at the tennis bar owned by cat lover MariPaz. Unfortunately, there was still a big bowl of dry food left out so no cats were interested in the food in the traps. Their tummies were full. Florence was not happy and wrapped up her trapping event early.
At the next feeding/trapping point in Encimas, Florence and the cats were already waiting for me and for food. Manfred, my cat feeder friend and I work together perfectly. Because of this good cooperation with Manfred, the cats were not fed and so they were hungry. It does not take long until they come around the traps.
Meanwhile, many local neighbours appeared and spoke with us. They were all very supportive cat lovers and they showed us photos of their home cats, so it will be easier for us to recognize which cats are feral and which are domestic. So, THANK YOU to all of you so much to help build awareness.
In this area, we managed to trap 2 females and 2 males. They were spotted as being new cars to this feeding point.
FYI: Earlier I popped around to the waste bins at horse stables. It
was a bad day for traffic in this zone and it was disrupting my action.
It's always the way, that if a cat hears a car, it runs away and hides. Finally
after 30 minutes, one skinny white tabby without any visible injuries
or wounds entered the trap and was caught.
So, at 10:15 and with 2 cars full of traps and carrier boxes, we drove down to Veronica our vet and friend, for whom we so happily volunteer our time to help her with this campaign.
However, when Veronica checked on the cat that I trapped at the horse stables, she saw that he had cancer on his nose which she cannot treat. Therefore, sadly, she decided that she had to put him to sleep. Such sad news and it is always so heartbreaking, but it was suffering and that is not kind.
At 13:30, the other 4 were operated on and later picked up by Florence and myself. The cats were so tired and exhausted and because it was predicting rain, Florence let them sleep in a quiet room of her house overnight.
In the morning the cats were released and they could not wait to get back to their freedom and their home location.
