TRAPPING REPORT - MARCH 20, 2021

The Trapping week only brought results on Monday, March 15, 2021 when 2 teams were out with traps.

Tina had informed Manfred, our community cat feeder to kindly not feed the cats in the evening nor first thing in the morning, so that they would be hungry and be attracted to the food in the traps. He agreed to feed after the trapping session and Tina was very happy with is co operation.

Tina started 8:00 and prepared the traps with fresh sardines and immediately 4 cats started to snoop around the trap. Out of these 4, Tina could see that 2 cats were tagged so already done, however 2 still needed to be fixed.

After a few minutes, Tina got lucky and one went into the trap and launched the trigger. Down came the door and it was trapped. The cats heard the "clack" of the trap and dispersed.

After a few minutes, a young and tiny, maybe 8 month old, cat appeared and quickly approached the trap because of the smell of the sardines. Fascinated to get this extraordinary food she touched the trigger only after 2 minutes. As usual, Tina covered the trap with a cloth to calm her down.

Finally, Tina set up the third trap with the same preparation of sardines. After a little bit, a bengal cat appeared and went in and was trapped.

It was an amazing morning as Tina trapped three cats by 8:50. Surprised at her luck, Tina went to the car to check once more to make sure that they were not ear tipped.

Meanwhile, Andrea and Robert were not having any luck where they were so moved over to the same location as Tina. Tina had seen another cat that needed to be neutered but her traps were full.

Andrea reports, "We were in our usual spot at Pepe La Sal at the crack of dawn. But there were no cats to be seen. We decided to move on to Girasoles, where there are usually many cats. When we arrived there were around 10 cats waiting for their breakfasts! We set up the traps, this time with sardine on the menu. Within minutes a large, fluffy black and white male cat entered the trap. He had avoided the trap so many times previously, so at long last we could trap him BUT, as bad luck would have it, a fast moving car went roaring by and spooked him out of the trap. Urgggh. Now, all the other cats were spooked too."

She continues, "Meanwhile, we heard from Tina that she had already filled her traps down the road at Manfred's house, so we moved to her position. Within a few minutes, there was a huge macho on his way into one of the traps, but at the last second, a smaller tabby pushed him out of the way and entered the trap. He was locked in! This was extremely lucky as the smaller cat was a young female, in early stages of pregnancy. We then placed the next trap on the pavement where we had spotted another handsome non neutered cat. Within minutes, he was trapped."

Andrea concluded, "We were on the way to Veronica the vet by 10:30, after a very successful morning of teamwork at it's best. The cats were dropped off but we were told that Veronica would be tied up longer with the cats as there were 4 females that were a little pregnant and needed special care."

In conclusion, the cats were picked up at 14:45 and taken to Manfred's garage to recover. Since this was there home area, it made sense to bring them here and Manfred was co operative about it all once again. At 20:00, he let the cats return to their street life.
