TRAPPING REPORT - FEBRUARY 20, 2021
Trapper Tina was out at 8:00 on Monday, February 15, 2021 in the Begonias zone. She prepared a trap with newspaper and tasty wet fishy food. Her goal was to trap 2 males but to her disappointment, there were no cats around. It could be due to the fresh 9 degree weather that morning?
She rattled the biscuit bag and spread little tasty sardine pieces down on the ground with the hopes to lure the cats. Finally at 8:30, one of the males came along. He was hungry so he did not hesitate to enter the trap and quickly the door snapped shut. He was trapped. One down, one to go!
Tina had to wait another hour until the second sexy male finally appeared. He was black and white and had many scratches from fighting. He was also very clever and made a big circle round the trap and decided to walk up and down the street waiting for the regular cat feeder. Tina decided to dropped off the trap close to him and tempt him with a different type of food until he could not resist the new wet cat food. Finally, Tina was able to lure him into the entrance of the trap. He was very seduced with the taste of the new food and moved over to the cage trigger. He touched it and he was trapped.
Tina dropped them both off to the vet at 10:30 and picked them up 14:30pm. They slept until 17:00 and then they were released to their friends.
On Tuesday, February 16, 2021 trappers Andrea and Robert were in their positions by the crack of dawn.
Andrea reports, "It was cold and the cats all seemed to still be in bed!
I was at Pepe La Sal with a trap loaded with goodies. After a while a macho who I've caught at least twice *smile* decided to guard the entrance to the trap. I shooed him away, but he kept coming back. No other cats appeared during the hour I was there, so I decided to join Robert who was over in Girasoles in a cosy car, with coffee and sandwiches!"
She continues, "There were several cats visible, including the pretty female we caught the week previously. She looked very well. Then, after a half an hour a large macho entered the trap. We saw that he had many nasty bites and wounds from fighting. He was extremely aggressive in the trap but calmed down when we covered him with a blanket."
The team waited patiently for another hour but no luck.
Andrea remarks, 'Veronica our vet, took great care of 'our' boy, not only neutering him, but even treating his wounds. I collected him at 15:00 and he was very glad to be released back at his home, just as the sun was setting. His days of baby making and fighting are now a thing of the past."
She concluded, "We will be back again soon, as there is still work to be done in these zones. But next time I will make sure that I have warmer clothes because even in Spain it's sometimes very cold in the early morning."
To round off the week, on Friday, February 19, 2021 Tina headed to the Begonias zone at 8:00 under chilly and foggy conditions. There was not one cat was in sight. It was going to be a day for PATIENCE, so much patience!
Tina prepared the first trap and was approached by a macho with an ear tag. Because he knew her, he followed her to the car for a snack.
Tina was hoping to trap 2 young kittens that she had spotted before, but no luck. Tina was worried about them because they were the age for mating season. Finally, 20 minutes later, a beautiful lady – a Siamese - appeared and entered the trap. She was very hungry. It only took 2 minutes until she calmed down with the cover placed over her and Tina popped her into the car. Tina waited for her sister to appear but she was too shy and only showed for a few bits of food.
The 2nd trap was ready and Tina hid herself away, really far from the trap. She knew that to trap this next boy, who was being so careful and trusting nobody, there had to be no noise or distractions. It took 1 hour until the little boy (small size - 6 months) finally appeared. However, within15 minute he was secure in the trap.
Feeling lucky, Tina prepared a 3rd trap and set her sights on a young black lady but she was not going to be trapped today. About an hour later, a handsome long haired boy came along and trigger the trap.
At 10:30, Tina dropped the trio off to the vet and then picked them up at 13:20. She let them sleep until 17:30. The young cats flew like arrows out of their sleeping boxes. Only the long haired cat, who was a bit older, took his time to exit.
GOOD NEWS FROM TINA
"Here, as at Pepe/Girasoles, we have the perfect cooperation with the cat feeder. He did not feed the evening before and of course not in the morning. This co ordination means that when we trap, the cats are hungry and enter the cage with less effort.
