TRAPPING REPORT - OCTOBER 19 2020
A BUSY WEEK OF TRAPPING
** On Tuesday, October 13, 2020, Trapper Tina was over at the tennis bar called Como en Casa, where we do our fundraisers, to deal with a mother cat.
Tina arrived at 9:30 with a trap and loaded it up. The mother cat was extremely suspicious of Tina and the trap. She proved to be a tricky opponent as the cat went in and out and around the trap and then would disappear and then return. Tina was surprised that that he mother was not interested in wet cat food so she tried a few biscuits. Finally, Tina was forced to bring out the tuna! This last treat sealed the deal and the mother cat could not resist. Tina had to hid herself, so that the mother would go into the trap. Finally, the trigger was snapped and the door came down.
After an hour, at 10:40 Tina took the mother cat to the vet. At 14:30, she picked her up again and took her home for a relaxing afternoon. Then at 19:00, Tina released her back to her home behind the tennis bar.
**On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Tina was out again with her trap, this time in the Kalmias zone.
She started at 8:30 in the garden of a community lady named Adele. Tina was told that another mother cat was returning to Adele's garden yearly, to birth a batch of kittens. This year was no different and Tina saw the kittens with their mother and Adele was taking good care of them. However, it was time to have this yearly ritual put to a stop!
Adele was able to help Tina by keeping the kittens busy with biscuits, while Tina tried to get the mother interested in the fine smell of tuna that was already prepared in the trap. It took only ten minutes for the mother to trigger the trap and Tina quickly covered her with a blanket to calm her down.
Off the both went to the vets.
At 13:00, Adele picked the other cat and let her sleep in the bedroom of her home. This was such a nice, gentle way for the mother to be treated after her operation because she knew Adele's familiar voice and the smells were also a comfort. The mother cat knew she was home and close to her kittens again.
** Also on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Trapper Jenny of Monte Cala was able to trap yet another cat from her zone.
She was out at 8:00 to set up her trap. It has been hard to trap in this zone because of so many kittens who are yet too young to neuter. However, Jenny was lucky and managed to trap another female.
She took the cat to the vets at 9:15 and picked her up again at 13:00. This mother cat remained in Jenny's home until she had recovered. Then at 18:00, the cat was released. All sorted.
** On Friday, October 16, 2020 a new trapper, Saskia, had some good luck trapping over in the Olivos zone.
She set up her trap in the rough part over the Dreasea camping area, where she knew of a mother and kittens was living. One of the kittens was the first to walk into the trap but Saskia noticed that the young cat had already been ear tipped, so she released it after a good feed of treats.
Finally, the mother was trapped and taken down to the vets. She was later picked up and recovered at Saskia's home.
When the mother cat was returned to the wild, she shot of the cage like an arrow. Saskia left a generous serving of food and water to comfort the mother and watched as the rest of the colony enjoyed the meal. It was a kind gesture considering that there wa a cold night ahead.
Saskia has agreed to keep feeding and friending the cats in this area so that trapping them will be easier.
